Skatetalk Live! presents a very special piece of Jim Grecos career in skateboarding
created by our good friend Joey Sinko. Here’s what Joey told us.
“Greetings, my name is Joey. Let me start by saying, I didn’t make this
video to tell you who Greco is. I didn’t make this to tell you how to feel,
or sell you something. I leave that shit to the commercials during
half-time. I simply had the idea of an ode to the life and career of Jim
Greco. It was something I had to do. Period. I attempted to express
and celebrate how I see his skating, while he is alive and well! As I was
editing some of his classic clips, I couldn’t help but notice a parallel
between his explosive mob-like persona and characters in films like Casino
or Mean Streets. You have people like Ace Rothstein or Johnny Boy who won’t
let people stand in their way while they are trying to
conduct business, like Jim. A man who could probably have an entire city
“wacked” in order to conduct his business, the business of dropping hammers
and redefining that word (as you’ll see in the video). I’ve seen those
films 1000 times, but I always manage to discover something
inspiring within those characters, as I do with Greco. His skating always
feels new to me or any one with some imagination.”
Also since we were posting and haven’t for a while, we hit up our buddy Dan Rogers to say a few words about Grecs, hit it Dan!
“Timing is everything. Sweet young Robert Altamirano called me earlier today and asked me to write an intro? or video reveiw/intro of this video you’re about to watch from a guy named Joey Sinko? or something like that. Anyway, if I would’ve written earlier today when Bobby called me it would have went something like this:
who the fuck took the time to do this? what’s wrong with your friend? everyone has already seen this footage and some of it is only 6 months old! how can you have a retrospective video of a guy who is still ripping as a pro? and why the fuck is Erik just thrown in there he should have his own video….and why the fuck guns n’ roses? Your friend Joey is an idiot.
I could’ve gone on forever. It’s so easy to laugh, it’s so easy to hate, it takes guts to be gentle and kind. So you’ve got the later in the night version, the late in the night version where I sit back after putting my ferel kids to bed, and reflect on Grecs, all the shit he’s been through, all the shit he’s overcome, all the success he’s had, he’s an amazing dude. But believe it or not I really look forward to the stuff that’s still to come too! How is he still doing it? He just filmed one of his best parts post 30 somehow….is it Baker/Deathwish juice those guys are drinking or what? He did a fucking tony hawk trick for christ’s sake!!!!!!!!!! 540 ollie fakie nose grind!!!????!!! FUCK OFF that shit was impossible.
So now I’m supposed to tell you how awesome Jim is. It’s really easy to do when you’ve known someone since they were 15 and you were like an older brother to someone. It seems like they can do no wrong, no matter how ridiculous they dress, act, skate, fight, premadonna out on you.
No matter what they’ll always be the kid in the hookups van leaving on a nation wide tour rolling through Vegas at 6 a.m. with all the other pussies sleeping already, me driving, him riding shotgun, we don’t say a fucking word to each other for at least the first hour that he’s sitting up there with me…..then…..Metallica came on for some reason and all I did was nod my head to the music and he went APESHIT!!!!!! In his little guido voice, “you like Metallica Rock?” Yeah sure they’ve put out some good stuff. “I love this one” Jim proceeded to dance, punch, jump (yeah jump) and somehow lay on the dash too! every moment screaming the lyrics to ME and of course I couldn’t help but fall in love with this crazy ass kid from Connecticut right then and there. Before this moment crossing the desert at 6 in the morning Jim definitely wasn’t in my good graces for some reason, but that moment, that time, that song, only us to share it, formed a bond that will last forever.
TIMING IS EVERYTHING.
Enjoy Jim’s hard work in this video. For those who don’t know him at all and hate on the posturing, the outfits, the performance art he sometimes puts on, there is one thing you need to know about Grecs. He’s a student of the game of riding skateboards and every moment of this motherfucker’s life is about one thing: getting tricks and stoking people out.
Jim epitomizes skateboarding. eat shit.”
Well with all this said, let’s watch this thing.
